FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Santa Clara, CA - June 29, 2023 - Mission College is thrilled to announce that recent graduate Melissa Rivera has been awarded the prestigious Karl S. Pister Scholarship. Her path to graduation has been nothing short of extraordinary, overcoming challenging circumstances to achieve academic excellence and demonstrate unwavering determination.

The Karl S. Pister Scholarship Award, established by former UC Santa Cruz Chancellor Karl S. Pister, provides opportunities for outstanding community college students aiming to transfer to UCSC.

Despite facing significant socioeconomic challenges, Rivera’s commitment to improving the lives of others and her remarkable dedication made her a deserving recipient of this esteemed award. She will continue her academic journey at UCSC, pursuing a degree in Astrophysics.

Rivera's upbringing was marked by adversity, growing up with a parent struggling with addiction and another who faced imprisonment. However, she refused to let these obstacles define her future, embarking on a journey that would lead her to tremendous accomplishments.

On May 26, Rivera graduated from Mission receiving multiple degrees and certificates, including an Associate's of Arts degree in Liberal Arts: Natural Science & Mathematics, an Associate of Science Degree in Computer Network Technology, an Associate of Science for Transfer Degree in Mathematics, an Associate of Science for Transfer Degree in Physics, and a Transfer Studies IGETC Certificate of Achievement. Her dedication and commitment to education have earned her recognition as a truly exceptional student.

Reflecting on her experience, Melissa expressed her gratitude for the support she received at Mission College, stating, "Mission has fully embraced me as an unconventional student and has not only shaped my educational journey but also helped me recognize and improve my leadership qualities."

MESA at Mission

Melissa's educational journey was primarily self-navigated until she discovered the MESA office at Mission College in 2019. Despite the challenges of attending meetings with her 1.5-year-old child, Melissa found unwavering support from Director Edrina Rashidi, who made both Melissa and her child feel welcomed.

This pivotal encounter opened doors to numerous programs, including HSI-STEM, TRIO, mentorship programs, internships, and more.

Additionally, Melissa's accomplishments extended beyond the campus grounds. She was selected as a NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) scholar, participated in a transformative study abroad program in Costa Rica, presented her research at the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, and selflessly volunteered as an iMentor, guiding first-generation high school students on their path to college.

Rivera's journey serves as an inspiration to all, illustrating that with determination, hard work, and access to vital resources, anyone can realize their dreams, irrespective of their circumstances.

Mission College celebrates Melissa on her outstanding achievements and looks forward to celebrating her success during the upcoming Commencement ceremony.
