Amelia  Akers-Martin

Faculty, ESL and Academic Support

Amelia has been at Mission College for just over 20 years, teaching ESL credit and noncredit courses, as well as study skills, and academic strategies courses at the Academic Support Center. Over the years, she has served as a department chair, a division chair, and on numerous college committees. Amelia is currently serving as the coordinator for the noncredit ESL program and the chair of the Noncredit Committee.

Fast Facts 

Amelia was born in Iowa and raised on the family farm. Growing up in a very rural area, she loved the wide open spaces, connection to the natural environment, and rural cultural traditions. She moved to the city and entered the university with a dream of learning other languages and meeting people from other cultures. She speaks Spanish and has also studied French, Portuguese, Italian, and Vietnamese. Traveling is her favorite activity. She spends a month in Spain every summer with friends and family.  Amelia also loves science fiction movies, and her favorite music is salsa/merengue, Spanish rock/rumba, and country & bluegrass.
